JGM’s shop is filled with best-in-class equipment needed to complete projects “when you need it yesterday.” However, this equipment and hazardous energy can pose many threats, such as lacerations, broken bones and even electrocution to our shop employees.
At JGM, uncompromising safety is our priority, which is why our shop team recently participated in LOTO training to enhance safety processes and procedures when working around heavy machinery. During lockout/tagout training, team members learned proper lockout procedures including:
- Why placing a lock on an energy source first is important to prevent anyone other than the person who holds the key from turning the machine on while it is getting maintenance;
- How to properly attach and label tags to energy sources, so others know not to run a piece of equipment until the tag is removed;
- A detailed overview of JGM’s energy control program;
- Specific LOTO procedures relevant to each job description and/or duties; and
- Various requirements enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
”LOTO is like taking your car keys out of the ignition and placing them in your pocket when working on your car. It stops someone from jumping in and moving the car not knowing you are underneath,” said Rob Policastro, JGM’s health and safety manager.
At JGM, every team member plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of everyone in and out of the shop. Providing the team with extensive training better equips them to identify and resolve at-risk behaviors and potential hazards immediately. JGM works diligently to proactively prevent accidents from happening and knows that when it comes to safety, ongoing training is essential.
