Doug Smith in JGM Shop

Meet Doug Smith: The Welding Wizard

At JGM, “we can, we will, we do” is our mantra. It takes talent, grit, and a strong work ethic to conquer our client’s toughest challenges. One team member who exemplifies these characteristics is Doug Smith.

Doug is a shop foreman and talented welder. He has been a part of the JGM family for 11 years and is responsible for job planning, project coordination, teaching and training, and fabrication.

To learn more about Doug and his role at JGM, we put him in the spotlight and asked some tough (and fun) questions. Hear what he had to say!

What led you to a career in welding?

Doug: I took three years of welding in high school, but vocational school ultimately led me to pursue a career in welding.

Can you tell us about your background in welding (i.e., certifications, training, apprenticeships, etc.)?

Doug: In addition to my vocational school education, I am a certified stick welder and certified flux core welder. I am also overhead crane and rigging trained.

What is your favorite part about welding?

Doug: My favorite part about welding is fabricating to a print and knowing my welds will be holding that piece together for the next 100 years!

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone pursuing a career in welding?

Doug: My advice to someone getting into welding/fabrication is do not be afraid to learn from your mistakes and keep an open mind.

Tell us a bit about your most memorable and/or favorite welding project at JGM.

Doug: My favorite and most memorable project is 66 Hudson Spiral, which I fabricated crank columns for. Another favorite project I worked on is the American Dream retail and entertainment complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Doug: If I could learn to do anything, roller coaster fabrication would be top on my list.

What is one thing most people do not know about you that may surprise them?

Doug: Something that may surprise people is I raced motocross every weekend competitively from 12 to 19 years old.
