Toolbox Talk: Angle Grinder Safety

English Ι Spanish

Topics: Guarding & wheel selection, PPE, safe operating practices, wheel changes, sparks & fire safety

Why This Matters

Angle grinders are one of the most-used tools in the shop — and one of the leading causes of hand, eye, and face injuries. A wheel that shatters, a tool that kicks back, or sparks that land in the wrong place can cause serious harm in a split second.

Before You Grind

  • Inspect the wheel before every use — check for cracks, chips, or damage. If in doubt, throw it out.
  • Confirm the wheel’s maximum RPM rating is equal to or higher than the grinder’s RPM. Never mismatch.
  • Use the correct wheel type for the job — cutting, grinding, and flap discs are not interchangeable.
  • Make sure the guard is installed and positioned correctly. Never remove or bypass a guard.
  • Check that the wheel is mounted correctly and the arbor nut is properly tightened.

Machine Guards & Handles

  • Never operate a grinder with the guard removed or the side handle missing.
  • Position the guard so it shields you from sparks and wheel fragments, with the opening angled away from your body.
  • Always install and use the side (auxiliary) handle — it must be attached and tightened before starting the tool.
  • Never grind with only one hand or with the handle removed to “get into a tight spot.”
  • If a guard or handle is damaged, cracked, or missing, tag the tool out and remove it from service until it’s repaired.

PPE Requirements

  • Face shield plus safety glasses underneath — a face shield alone does not meet eye protection requirements.
  • Hearing protection when grinding for extended periods.
  • Leather gloves and, for heavy grinding, a leather apron or sleeves to protect against sparks.
  • Respiratory protection when grinding generates dust or fumes that exceed exposure limits.

Safe Operating Practices

  • Secure the workpiece so it cannot shift or move while grinding.
  • Stand to the side of the wheel’s rotation path, never directly in line with it, in case the wheel fails.
  • Use two hands and maintain a firm, balanced grip at all times.
  • Let the grinder reach full speed before it contacts the material — don’t force it into the cut.
  • Watch for kickback: keep the guard between you and the wheel, and never pinch or bind the wheel in the material.
  • Direct sparks away from yourself, coworkers, and anything flammable.

Wheel Changes

  • De-energize / unplug the tool before changing a wheel — never change a wheel while it’s connected to power.
  • Inspect the new wheel for cracks or damage before installing it.
  • Never use a wheel that has been dropped — internal damage may not be visible.
  • Reinstall the guard correctly after every wheel change.

Housekeeping & Fire Safety

  • Clear the work area of debris and flammable materials before grinding.
  • Sparks can travel 35 feet or more — know what’s around and below you.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher within reach and post a fire watch when grinding near combustibles.
  • Never grind near open flammable liquid containers or in a poorly ventilated space.

Discussion: Have you ever had a close call with a grinder? What would you do differently next time?

Orden, Limpieza y Seguridad Contra Incendios
