JGM was awarded the steel fabrication & erection contract for the new 110,000 Square foot state of the art Research, Development & Engineering Helicopter Hangar located on the Lakehurst Naval Air Station base. Working on an Active Naval base presents its challenges, however, JGM knows what it takes since we have worked on several bases over the years including Knolls Atomic Power laboratory, Dover Air force Base, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Knolls and Lakehurst Naval Base.

This project called for over 1200 tons of structural steel. All structural steel was required to have a SP-6 surface prep with shop applied Zinc Rich Primer. This project was unique in the fact that there were several single span trusses over 190’ long weighing more than 130,000 lbs. This structure required a unique erection approach to maintain full stability throughout the construction phase.

JGM supplied a step by step engineered erection plan and lift plan that was reviewed and approved by the Army Corp of Engineers. We utilized shoring posts in combination with helical coils to stabilize the exterior structural frame that would support the large span trusses. Using a 550- ton all terrain crane in combination with a 100-ton crawler and 70-ton truck we were able to erect the large trusses without significant bracing. Each truss was erected in a single day. This project required over 12,000 man-hours and was completed safely with zero lost time incident.
